CHAPTER SEVEN

Oh, don’t be ridiculous, Shelby told herself sharply. She’d been in love a hundred times since she was sixteen, and the average endurance of each incident was a month. As soon as the man of the moment displayed his clay feet, she fell out of love just as promptly as she’d fallen in.

She knew the stages well, and she could tell the precise moment when she went from attraction to infatuation to disillusionment to despair. But this time...

Mark had been displaying his less-than-attractive characteristics regularly since the moment she’d met him. And it didn’t seem to make any difference in how she felt.

He sensed the change in her as surely as if she had shouted it. He whispered her name, very softly, and kissed her again. The brush of his lips was like a flame across her sensitive skin as he teased her with kisses on her eyelids, her throat, the delicate lobe of her ear.

The zipper in the front of her running suit yielded to his impatient fingers, and Mark bent his head, a gleam of triumph in his dark eyes, to nibble her breast. “Thoughtful of you not to put on a bra,” he murmured, and Shelby sighed deep in her throat, giving herself up to enjoyment.

A knock sounded at the door.

Mark froze, his hand tensing against the curve of her breast.

“That’s the hot chocolate,” Shelby whispered.

“Would you rather drink that stuff or make love?”

“That’s not the right question. I have to answer the door. Let me go, please.”

He did, reluctantly. Shelby zipped her jacket, ran a hand over her tumbled hair, and opened the door.

The hotel manager raised an eyebrow when she saw Mark sprawled across Shelby’s bed, but she didn’t comment. She merely handed Shelby a wooden tray that held a chubby ceramic pot and two cups and said, “I was later than I’d expected in getting everything finished. I hope I didn’t—” she colored a little — “interrupt anything. Good night, Miss Stuart. Mr. Buchanan.”

“She knows damn well what she interrupted,” Mark muttered as soon as the door was closed. “Put that thing down and come back here.”

Shelby sniffed the aroma coming from the pot and shook her head. “Thanks, but I think I’ll drink my hot chocolate. Would you like some?”

“You’re a tease, Shelby Stuart. You know precisely what I’d like, and it isn’t hot chocolate.”

She avoided looking at him, knowing that the invitation in his eyes would draw her right back into his arms. She was grateful for the interruption. It had given her a few moments to think about what she was doing — but now she was confused. She wasn’t sure what she wanted.

I’ve known this man just a little more than two days, she told herself, and ten minutes ago I was ready to make love with him. What has happened to me? I’ve never felt this way before.

But a little voice in the back of her mind argued, It doesn’t feel as if you just met him. It feels as if you’ve known him forever.
